Shipping schedules use several abbreviations to describe departure and arrival times. Understanding these terms helps importers and exporters coordinate transport, prepare documents, and communicate realistic delivery expectations.

What Do These Abbreviations Mean?

  • ETD — Estimated Time of Departure: The expected departure time.
  • ETA — Estimated Time of Arrival: The expected arrival time.
  • ATD — Actual Time of Departure: The recorded departure time.
  • ATA — Actual Time of Arrival: The recorded arrival time.

The location and transport milestone should always be specified, such as departure from the loading port or arrival at the destination airport.

Why Can Estimated Dates Change?

Estimated dates may change because of weather, port congestion, equipment availability, or operational adjustments. An ETA is therefore a planning reference rather than a guaranteed delivery appointment.

Does Arrival Mean the Cargo Is Ready for Delivery?

Arrival does not automatically mean cargo is available for collection. Unloading, customs clearance, document release, and terminal procedures may still need to be completed.

Tracking both transport milestones and cargo availability gives businesses a clearer picture of the shipment’s progress.
